Men and Women's Swimming
Gaithersburg High School has had a swimming program from 1970 to the present. More recently, the team has been known as one of the larger teams amongst other Montgomery County Public Schools. Of these past seven years, the team has been in division III for five years and division II in one.[1]
The team has had up to 70 swimmers in the 2007–2008 season. This swim team included all who wanted to swim (despite skill level) under Coach Jill Milla. Coach Milla advocated strong team spirit and sportsmanship with her athletes at every team practice and competition. However, Coach Justin Owen wanted to change this team philosophy and allowed only athletes who were more serious about the sport. The team got smaller due to this change. Coach Owen left the team after two disappointing seasons.
Gaithersburg is 1 of 26 high schools in Montgomery County that swim in four divisions based on how successful a team is. Each division has a number of teams which varies from year to year based on a team's record of the previous season. Gaithersburg's swim season consists of 1 Scrimmage, 6 Dual Meets, 1 Relay Carnival, 1 Divisional Meet, 1 County Meet, and 1 Metro Meet.[1] The only swim meet the team competes in which is not strictly Montgomery County Public Schools is the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swim Meet. This meet invites all the Washington Metropolitan area private schools as well as Montgomery County Public Schools. The 2011-2012 season marks the return of MCPS swimmers to the Maryland State Championships. This also is a hybrid season where they will also compete at Metros. There are two changes to the schedule to accommodate the additional State meets: no more Relays Carnival and County Championships; MCPS swimmers compete in the Regional and State Championships right after Metros.[2]

The current team has two Junior Nationals level swimmers, Ellen Anderson and Tyler Pham, both of whom have broken several school records in the past three seasons. Both swimmers were selected to the second teams of the Washington Post's 2010–11 Winter All Met Swimming. Their academic standings got them selected for the USA Swimming Scholastic All American title (2010-2011 season). Ellen also made AAAU & AAAC times in two events for the 2010–2011 season.
